Tiles calculator

Tiles calculator

Roof or floor tiles for an area, with boxes, adhesive and grout.

How it works

Tiles = area × (1 + wastage) ÷ the area one tile covers. Stone coated roofing tiles overlap, so each covers about 0.46 m² of roof once fixed. Floor tiles cover their own size; allow 5–10% for cuts in a straight pattern and about 15% for a diagonal pattern. Boxes use the common pack sizes in Kenya; check the pack on the product.

Step by step

  1. Measure each roof face or room: length × width, then add the areas together.
  2. Divide by the area one tile covers (about 0.46 m² for a stone coated roof tile).
  3. Add 10% for cuts at edges, hips and valleys, then round up to whole tiles.

Worked example

Two roof faces, each 10 m long with a 5 m slope: 100 m² ÷ 0.46 = 218 tiles, plus 10% = 240 stone coated tiles.

Questions

How many stone coated tiles per square metre?

About 2.2 tiles per m² of roof, as each tile covers about 0.46 m² once overlapped. Check the cover width of the exact tile you buy.

How do I measure a roof?

Measure each roof face along the eaves (length) and from the eaves up to the ridge along the slope (width), then add the faces together.

How much extra should I order?

Allow about 10% for cuts at hips, valleys and edges, and keep a few spare tiles for future repairs.
